from the Committee on Ministry and Counsel Cultures of Noise and of Silence This month’s Reading is two paragraphs from A Book of Silence, by Sara Maitland. In these passages, Maitland contrasts the wider culture of noise and over-stimulation with the silence of Friends’ meeting for worship. The first, on p. 135, begins “The overstimulation, of which noise is a major factor, …” and ends “‘the Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silent before him.’” The second, on p. 141, begins “But at the heart of Quaker life is the Meeting for Worship…,” and continues through the quotation from Pierre Lacout, ending “‘The word born of silence must be received in silence.’” To read the full next, you will need to buy or borrow the book. |
