The Myth of Police Reform

The perspective and thoughtful analysis offered by Ta-Nehisi Coates, recent winner of the National Book Award and writer for The Atlantic, shed light on the complexities of race in America. As Ann Arbor Friends and others engage with the Ann Arbor Police Department in the wake of Aura Rosser's shooting in late 2014, some of Coates' essays on the subject of police-community relations offer useful insights. In particular, his piece in The Atlantic of April 15, 2015 (see http://www.theatlantic.com/ politics/archive/2015/04/the-myth-of-police-reform/390057/) reminds us that the answers need to come from a wider range of solutions than those that can be offered by the police alone. ~ Lynn Drickamer
